Rules Of Engagement: Winning The Hearts Of Staff

Neil Tilley, Upstream Print Solutions

Neil Tilley, Upstream Print Solutions

Actively engaging staff has been a central plank in the success of Upstream Print Solutions since its formation in the mid-1990s. Founder and CEO, Neil Tilley, has long believed that staff engagement is critical to business growth and, to achieve that engagement, he's developed a firm set of rules. For example, employees need to understand that they have rights and obligations in their interaction with others. We learn about the concept of FiFo, which highlights the importance of fitting in - or else! We also learn about the value of 360 degree appraisals, from the top of the organisation down; and the importance of "bringing out the dead", which offers opportunities for all employees to express their views about what's really going on in the business. Neil Tilley's rules of engagement have helped transform Upstream Print Solutions from a tight band of ten staff in 1995, to 297 staff members now and a turnover of $100 million.
