The big four banks aren't the only players in the market. Regional, or second-tier, banks have a role to play too, and add a layer of diversity to what can seem like a monolithic industry. Ram Kangatharan, Chief Operating Officer of BOQ, says clarity is what customers want most, and a good relationship with a local bank manager can help achieve that. He believes the BOQ franchise model, with owner-managers running their own small business, means they can speak the language of their business customers and champion the customer's cause. They look for people with strong community connections, as well as sound banking experience, to take on the role.
