OCTOBER 2011

Recharge Your Batteries

Alan Hargreaves

Alan Hargreaves

Running a business can be like running a marathon, and just as exhausting. So what do you do when your energy's flagging and inertia is setting in? People are relying on you to show leadership and keep things moving forward, but you're becoming stuck in a rut. Longtime business consultant and author Alan Hargreaves has some sound suggestions, distilled from his book "Recharge".

He starts with clearing your mind and decluttering your work space - get rid of all the stuff you don't need. Then look to your colleagues and your staff to share the load and bring forward some ideas. Look at your own strengths and weaknesses and play to your strengths. Then step back a bit - it's not all about you and helping others to grow is a key leadership skill. Finally, take action, but don't go for the "nuclear option" - small successes can be rewarding and lead naturally on to bigger ones.
